By The Light of
A Northern Star....

Our Society is built upon the ideals of honour, chivalry and courtesy. Two things go hand-in-gauntlet with those three ideals: Respect and Civility.
Some people will tell you that Respect must be earned before it is given. And this is, in the main, quite so. But we show respect quite often without even thinking about it doing a reverence before the thrones as we walk by them, even if there is nobody sitting in them at the time. By doing this, we are showing respect to The Crown. Not the King, not the Queen, but to The Crown.
But, I hear you say, aren't the King and Queen The Crown? Well, of course they are. But in some ways, they are not, as well.
The Sovereign and Consort make up "The Crown"; that is to say, they are the embodiment of it, since the
Sovereign and Consort are The King and The Queen. However, The Crown is more than just the two people who wear the regalia of office. Both symbolically and otherwise.
So we show our respect to The Crown by doing the reverence and other things, even if the people wearing the symbols of office are people we may not be particularly enamoured with. We do this because, for one thing, it would be extremely crass to do otherwise in public. And so we act in a civil manner or we act courteously, if you will by granting the office the respect we may not regard the office- holder(s) to have.
It's quite a little tight-rope we walk sometimes, isn't it?
Some would have it that because I grant the office and not the office-holders the respect, I am being dishonest, and therefore dishonourable. But I put it to you, while *I* may feel this way toward a particular person, or group of people, does this give me the right to very publicly act in such a boorish manner and possibly insult or otherwise hurt someone who's feelings are different than mine? If I believe that Sir Noresguy Norseguyson is a boob, does this mean that to be honourable I must publicly act out my antipathy for him? Or is it better, in the name of the common weal, to grant him a bow as I pass due to his being a Knight, and thereby give none offense? By acting in a civil manner, and granting him the respect due a Knight, even if he personally deserves my scorn, I am working at keeping Our Society working. Acting in a civil (aka, courteous) manner is the grease by which interpersonal relationships from jamming up due to differing perceptions.
My respect for your station may differ from the regard in which I hold you, but if I am behaving in a manner worthy of a member of the gentry of the realm, no-one else should ever suspect that I feel that way.

Strive to be worthy of respect.
Not just shows of respect.

Lord Erasmus The Traveller, GdS

From The Crown Principality Exchequer

I have recently taken over the office of Exchequer for our CP from Mikhail. For those who do not know me, I reside in the Barony of Lions Gate. I have held the positions of North Wind Editor, Chronicler, Seneschale, and am currently the Baronial Scribe. I also hold the office of Treasurer for the NSCA.
Mundanely, I have worked with a set of books since before I was a teenager. My dad was an accountant, and I grew up assisting him in his home business. By the time I was 13, I was handling a set of books for one of his clients. After graduation, I started out as a bookkeeper for a travel agency while taking my accounting and business courses at Brock University, in St. Catherines. I became a cost accountant and an internal auditor for International Harvester for many years. It seems that I have always held a position that kept me in the financial end of the businesses.
I am currently playing "catch-up" with the box load of paper that was given to me by Mikhail, and will be in touch with all the branch exchequers shortly. Kingdom is working on getting all exchequers out their individual warrants, rather than just a warrant list. Many of these have been forwarded to me for my signature, and are on their way back to Kingdom for the final signatures needed. If any branch has had a change in their exchequer, I would appreciate hearing from them as soon as possible. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. If I don't have an answer for you, my job is to get one. I look forward to working with all of you.

In service,

Because I Can....
...Crown Inscriptions

Inside the Royal crowns of Caid are inscribed the words "You rule because they believe". What a fitting sentiment! Now, one wonders, might be fitting for the inscriptions inside crowns from other SCA Kingdoms and principalities? The denizens of the Steps of the Cathedral of An Tir mailing list came up with the following suggestions:

Any Kingdom: "I fought in Crown Tourney, and all I got was this stupid crown!"

Any Kingdom: "Next time, fall down!"

Kingdom of the West: "Today, the West, tomorrow the Known World!"

Kingdom of An Tir: "This is your crown. It's worn on your head. Pointy ends up. Take your helm off, first."

Kingdom of Ansteorra: "Y'all rule nicely, now!"

Midrealm: "At least I get to go to Pennsic!"

Kingdom of the East: "The King's word is a damned fine suggestion!"

Kingdom of Atlantia: "If found, return to Michael of Bedford." (Michael was the first King of Atlantia and has reigned seven times.)

Kingdom of Ealdormere: "BOD? What BOD?" (Ealdormere is the first fully Canadian Kingdom; the BOD's rulings have very little "force-of- law" there.)

Kingdom of Atenveldt: "Stay in the shade or they'll melt."

Kingdom of Drachenwald: "Don't let the REAL monarchs know!" (In 5 different languages.)
