By The Light of A Northern Star....

So this is my swan song. Next month, there'll be a
sign on the cover saying "Under New Management".
For those who may have missed it, the new
Principality Chronicler will be Baroness
Theocharista from Seagirt. The credentials she
brings to this office are quite spectacular. I
think you'll like what you see.

Looking back at three years as Chroniclers, and as
with most retrospectives, things seem slightly
bittersweet. I stepped into what was, really, a
neglected Office, and had to re-build from nearly
the ground up. Now, any new Officer looks at the
works of their predecessors and tweaks things
around. But when an Office and a newsletter have
been effectively out of circulation for 18 months,
well, you have your work cut out for you. I like to
think that with the help of His Lordship, Duncan
Macquarrie, we got things off to a good start at
12th Night. People are still talking about the
Court Bingo Cards on the back page the Special
Edition.....

I promised to be more communicative to the branch
chroniclers. And I think I wasn't too bad at that.
But I sure could have done better. There were
things happening at the branch level that I didn't
learn about until (in one case) three chroniclers
later! We got a start on the Archives, and they will
eventually be something kind of interesting, even if
there will be several pounds of papers and a half-
dozen CDs to say nothing about ballots......we have
LOTS of ballots.....for just about everything ever
polled here in Tir Righ, going back to .....far too
far. Btu there's some other stuff too. I hope to
get a couple of CDs burned of photographs prior to
the official "stepping down" at Investiture.

What can I tell you about newsletter finances that
you probably haven't; already guessed? No
newsletter makes money. Do you know why? Well,
this month and last, I had no less than 11
complementary copies to send off that the regular
subscriptions had to cover. And the regular
subscriptions can't really do that. The fact that
this office is actually as close to the break-even
point as it is frankly astounds me......

Duncan and I got the eSentinel up and running, which
was a big move. And after Duncan stepped aside,
Lord Quentin came up with a couple of new ideas. We
still miss the occasional name (or email address
change), but by and large, this experiment
continues.

I got the Principality-Officer-Only eMail List up
and running. People can send questions and requests
to it, but only the Principality Officers can see
it. If you have something that you think the
Principality Curia needs to know about, send it to:
<northernofficers@antir.sca.org>

And I would be worse than remiss if I did not thank
my deputies over these last three years: Mistress
Elizabeth Braidwoode, who (up to last month) was the
administrator for the Great Northern Road eList
since its inception. She also steered me toward
this Office, reminding me when I was Seagirt's
Chronicler, how important it was to have all the
Regional Offices filled. She was my boss when I was
Seagirt's Seneschal; the turn about this last couple
of years was amusing. Even if email Lists are not
officially part of the Office. She also had this
habit of not appearing to whisper in my ear although
she actually did. Hearing "The joy is in the doing"
over and over and over made me understand that it
really is true....

The Honourable Duncan, Lord Macquarrie, who offered
to be my first eSentinel editor, and then WebMaster
as we recreated the North-cum-Tri Righ Website.
Okay. He recreated; I just sat back and said, "That
looks good...." He also created on short notice and
at his own cost the 12th Night Special Edition of
The Northern Sentinel that kicked off our run. He
had to step aside as his duties as a daddy took up
more of his time. But that's a really cool reason
to step aside. He says he's having a blast.....!

Lord Quentin d'Or, who asked Duncan if he needed a
hand one day. A month later, he was the WebMaster,
and the month after that, the eSentinel Editor.
This while he is already Shittimwoode's WebMaster,
and eList admin. And then the extremely silly man
goes and becomes the Kingdom Dexter Gauntlet Herald.
But he does wonderful work, and I just kind of
vaguely point in a direction I think would be
interesting to go and the next day detailed
instructions on how to get there including costs(!)
are in my in-basket.

I'd be worse than remiss not to mention my LadyWife,
HL Aliena Searover, who puts up with my disappearing
for a couple of days a month as I bang together yet
another issue, and agrees to get dragged along to
another event, even when she doesn't really feel
like it, because I have to be there due to being a
Principality Officer. The occasional buffs upside
the head to remind me about spell-checking and the
like help, too.....

Three years in Office, plus the time spent with the
NPC have left me a little burned out, so don't be
surprised if you don't see as much of me for the
next few months. Oh, I'll be around electronically,
and when finances permit, I'll probably show up here
and there. But for now, a small vacation is in
order.

I'm trying for six months.

For some reason, this sends my Lady, Household,
friends and compatriots into gales of laughter....

Lord Erasmus The Traveller, OP

From The Principality Herald

Greetings to the coronet, the heirs and populace of
the Principality of Tir Righ from Li Ban ingen
Echtigeirn MacNessa, your humble herald.

Once more I find myself asking for your aid. I am in
desperate need for deputies!! If any of the
following positions interest you or if you would
like to learn more about any of them please contact
me via email at li_ban@telus.net; by phone at (250)
639-9301; or by post at 30 Quail St, Kitimat BC, V8C
1K1. None of these positions require an extremely
experienced herald to perform; the duties for all of
them can be learned fairly quickly. If you have ever
thought of doing some of the things you have seen
heralds doing in the past, feel free to talk with
me.

Positions needing filling:
Drop-dead deputy: This person is responsible for
filling in for me when I can't make it to an event.
It is more of an organizational position than the
others. This individual would be responsible for
making sure that there are enough heralds present to
do the various heraldic duties (such as court,
field, and town crying). Also, this person would
attend Curia meetings, give reports, and be
responsible for making sure that a copy of the
ceremonial is present and on hand. You would deal
directly with the coronet and the heirs (if any at
the time), making sure that they have what they need
when they need it. You would work with the local
herald(s) in setting up Heralds' Point and making
sure it is manned. You would be responsible for
organizing a consult table if such is going to
present (we don't have a Principality library yet,
so this one doesn't happen often) and probably doing
some consulting yourself.

This is the only position for which I would require
a person who has been a herald before; I do not
require an extremely experienced herald, but some
knowledge of what is involved in heraldry is a
definite plus.

Voice deputy: This person would be responsible for
organizing and performing, or at least making sure
that someone is on hand to perform, all court
activities. You would work directly with the coronet
and heirs (if any) in determining the order of
events in court, and you would be responsible for
filling out (or making sure that it is properly
filled out) the court report form. You would also be
required to organize any processional or grand
march, in consultation with the coronet. As such,
you would be required to have on hand and available
a copy of the ceremonial and order of march for the
various processionals. You would be responsible for
maintaining these documents and making sure that
everything that's needed is present in them.

Field deputy: This person would be responsible for
organizing (and performing, if necessary) all field
heraldry at an event. This involves calling for
people willing for herald the tourneys as well as
helping to do the same if not enough response is
forthcoming. (In my experience, Tir Righ has never
had a lack of willing and helpful heralds!!)

Scribe: This person would be responsible for making
sure that the awards scrolls that are required are
available for the coronet to present. As a part of
this, you would be responsible for distributing
scroll blanks to artists for painting and
calligraphing. This person is the contact person for
all artists and calligraphers out there who wish
help in producing scrolls. This is another position
where you would work closely with the coronet.

Please, please, please, if you have ever had an
interest in heraldry consider taking one of these
positions. Thank you.

In service,
Li Ban ingen Echtigeirn MacNessa
Tir Righ Herald

From The SCA Board of Directors

Position Available-Administrative Assistant to the
Board of Directors

The SCA Board of Directors is currently accepting

editorial assistance as needed for Society officer
manuals. He or she will also be responsible for
maintaining a list of branch boundaries, preparing
and maintaining Society and Corporate officer
warrants, ensuring that changes to the governing
documents are communicated to the membership and

Administrative Assistant may be expected to perform
other duties as assigned by the Board.

written and oral communication skills, the ability
to work independently to deadlines and to prioritize

From The President of the SCA, Inc.

Greetings unto all who receive this missive:

The Directors are pleased to announce that the long-
anticipated Member Survey is now online and ready
for your responses. This survey asks your feedback
on a number of topics related to membership, its
structure, and the corporation. A separate section
of the survey consists of basic demographic
questions to help give us a better picture of the
active participants of the Society.

You can take the survey online at the SCA's website:
www.sca.org/survey, but please feel free to print
off and distribute the survey so that those without
computer access may complete it as well.

You may also request a copy of the survey from the
SCA's corporate office (PO Box 360789, Milpitas, CA
95036-0789). Hardcopy responses may be mailed to the
same address. Please, only one response per person.
Your participation is vital! There are over 28,000
members of the SCA, yet the Board of Directors
typically receives responses from only a small
percentage membership when commentary is requested.

Your input is very important to our organization's
future development. Please take a few moments to
complete this survey before December 31, 2003. We
are eager to hear what you have to say!

In service,
Meg Baron

From the Kingdom Lowenmahne Herald

Good gentles of the Kingdom, it is now only 9 months
(or so) to July Coronation. At that time I will have
served two years as Lowenmahne Herald of An Tir. The
way things are shaping right now, I do not believe I
will be able to carry on for another two-year term,
although I would very much like to do so. Therefore,
this is OFFICIAL NOTICE that I am retiring effective
July Coronation next year (A.S. 38, C.E. 2004), and
I am now soliciting applications for a successor in
the office.

The primary duty of the office is to foster field
heraldry and town crier activities in the Kingdom.
The incumbent is responsible for these activities at
Crown events. Please note that responsible does NOT
necessarily mean "you have to organize it yourself";
it means "you have to make sure it happens, even if
you have to have a stunt double." Experience as a
voice herald is important, as is a willingness to
teach and ability to travel. Good people skills are
an absolute must. There is official impedimentia; I
have built a box-cum-table which measures roughly
24" x 36" x 8". It contains all kinds of supplies,
etc., and opens up to form a small but workable desk
for Heralds' Point at events. You need to be able to
transport this to events.

Interested applicants should send me a copy of the
Society and mundane curriculum vitae which should
place particular emphasis on relevant training,
experience and skill sets. The address to send to is
<lowenmahne@antir.sca.org>, and applications must be
received not later than XIIth Night A.S. 38 (C.E.
2004)

My intention is to recommend a successor to Black
Lion Principal Herald shortly thereafter, and to
work with my successor at May Crown, so that when I
officially step down at July Coronation, they can
smoothly transition into the office.

My thanks to the many heralds with whom it has been
my pleasure to work over the past couple of years. I
shall certainly continue to hold myself available as
a herald at events, and look forward to seeing you
at as many events as I can get to.

Yours aye,
Uilliam Lowenmahne

Silver Whale Competition 13 Dec, 2003
The Barony of Seagirt Victoria, BC

Once again the Barony of Seagirt is hosting our
annual persona competition. This year Silver Whale
will be held on Dec 13 in conjunction with the
Baron's Scholar Trials. The competition is an
opportunity to present an authentic and logical
persona you have created and who could have existed
before the year 1650. (This is not to be a
recreation of an historic, fiction, or SCA
character). The competition is open to both men and
women.

This is not a competition to win against others, but
to accomplish a goal of presenting a successful
piece of theatre. This means bringing together and
presenting everything - from knowledge, bearing and
attitude to props and aids such as food, costume(s),
skills and activities needed to make the persona a
whole, living, believable person.

Interested in getting more information? Please
contact Tatiana Alexievna by email or phone and an
information package and application form will be
forwarded to you. Applications must be received no
later than Nov 1, 2003 in order to be accepted for
this year's competition.

Because I Can...

Lord Erasmus, our outgoing Principality Chronicler,
was foolish enough to leave the Because I Can space
open and untouched when he sent the copy to me for
e-Sentinel editing.

What a foolish, foolish man.

I’ve spent many years in the bardic circle, which is
where I met Erasmus a moon or two ago. It is in
honour of all of the times he’s wandered up to a
bardic and called me over to sing one song or
another that I dedicate this song. It is to the tune
of the “Man Who Never Returned”, which is commonly
filked in SCA bardics to the “Knight Who Never
Returned” or “Charlie’s Lament”.

The Tale of Lord Erasmus the Traveler
Lyrics by Quentin d’Or

Well let me tell you a story of a far off Trav’ler
and a tragic and fateful day
He took leave of his senses, kissed his lovely lady,
went to play in the SCA!

And did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, he’s the
man who never returned!

He lives on The Rocks, defended by the Ferries, as a
seneshal he did no harm
Tjorkill noted his devotion, checked with Elowyn,
and his device became his arms!

But did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, he’s the
Lord who never returned!

But did he learn his lesson? No, this far off
Trav’ler kept right on the track he chose
So the day arrived, as we knew it would, that Aliena
bought him his WoAW!

And did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, he’s the
WoAW who never returned!

And the years have flown and the honors have
mounted, Orca, Rock, MI, Seagull
It came as no surprise when the Goutte arrived –
from the King who oversaw his WoAW

But did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, for his
ship has never returned!

Then the day arrived, overseen by Davin, that his
temerity was heard
He spoke for Uilliam, quite out of order, and then
James flipped him the bird!

And did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, he’s the
Pel who never returned!

And did he ever return? No, no he never returned and
his fate is still unlearned
He may play forever in the World of Honour, this
Trav'ler has never returned!
