Word of the Day ? September 3 ? ? caduceus\kuh-DOO-see-us\ ? ? noun ? 1 : the symbolic staff of a herald; specifically : a representation of a staff with two entwined snakes and two wings at the top ? 2 : an insignia bearing a caduceus and symbolizing a physician ? ? ? ? The U.S. Army Medical Corps chose the caduceus as its symbol in 1902. ? "Since then the politics of health care have grown more twisted and tangled than the two snakes entwined around the staff in a caduceus, which is sometimes used as a symbol of medicine." ? From an article by Michael Cooper in The New York Times, February 15, 2012 ? The Greek god Hermes, who served as herald and messenger to the other gods, carried a winged staff entwined with two snakes. The staff of Aesculapius, the god of healing, had one snake and no wings. The word ''caduceus," from Latin, is a modification of Greek "karykeion," from "karyx," meaning "herald." Strictly speaking, "caduceus" should refer only to the staff of the herald-god Hermes (Mercury to the Romans), but in practice the word is often applied to the one-snake staff as well. You might logically expect the staff of Aesculapius to be the symbol of the medical profession?and indeed, that is the symbol used by the American Medical Association. But you will also quite frequently see the true caduceus used as a medical symbol. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Greetings, Hartwood! I am looking for help in a few areas and hope that some volunteers will step forward to fill the need. 1. We are still looking for Regional Coordinators in South Hartwood (Nanaimo area) and West Hartwood (Port Alberni area). (This job is a mix of administrative and hands-on: you determine how much hands-on you want to do.) This work needs to be arranged by the Regional Coordinator, but can be actually done by themselves or another designated person: - to coordinate regular A&S meetings: these can be at your home or travel about the region, whatever works for your area. You, together, decide what you want to work on and do: watch a movie, do a group activity, solo projects in a social atmosphere, learn something new together... lots of possibilities! - to record A&S meetings and attendance, and file a report to the A&S Minister on A&S activities quarterly: by the 1st of January, April, July, October. - to take to A&S meetings/people: Shire of Hartwood group projects, encourage participation and be the "go-to" person for information in that area. - to ensure that A&S people get information on up-coming A&S events, displays, competitions, etc., especially as put up on the hartwood at tirrigh.org (Facebook optional) or as is sent to you directly from the A&S Minister. - someone to let the A&S Minister know what the A&S needs and wants of your area are, so that where possible they may be addressed. - regular access to computer email and telephone essential to this position (sometimes multiple times per day, sometimes twice a week). Remember that this is your area. For the most part, what will happen at your A&S nights will be determined by the people attending, what you arrange for each other, and what you choose to do together and separately. If extra workshops are desired, please let the A&S Minister know and we'll see what can be arranged for instructors to come in / students to come out. :) A 'kitty' may be put out to help pay for fuel or participant may split the costs of workshops fees. In some cases, we can take a potential weekend workshop bid to council for funds for a hall and treat it like an event - if approved. Anyone interested, please send SCA and mundane names, contact information, and a brief A&S resume / application to artsci at hartwood.tirrigh.org or canzonet3 at gmail.com 2. I am in the last 8 months of my term as A&S Minister for Hartwood. It would be nice to find a deputy interested in taking up this position when I step down, so that there is training time available. :) (This job is mostly administrative, with a little bit of hands-on.) Currently, the A&S Minister is responsible for: - collecting reports from Hartwood's Regional Coordinator's by the 1st of January, April, July, October. - reporting on all A&S activities within the branch quarterly to Seneschal(e), and Principality A&S on the 15th of January, April, July, October. These reports are to include follow-up on last quarter's activities, reports on monthly meetings and attendance in all our areas for this quarter, anticipated projects for the future quarter, reports on competition entries / group projects on-going & completed / workshops / dance / games / any combined efforts with other Officers / progress report on how the amalgamation is going: celebrations, difficulties, plans for dealing with challenges. - completing a domesday report from the quarterly reports, and having it into the the Seneschal(e) and Principality A&S by December 1st. - determining the yearly budget needs and presenting them to Council and the Financial Committee when appropriate. - deciding upon 1 or 2 yearly group projects and coordinating them. - collecting information on A&S activities from Principality A&S, northern at antir.sca.org, Hartwood Council meetings, Financial Committee meetings, and spreading the information directly to Regional Coordinators and to populace via hartwood at tirrigh.org (Facebook is optional). - coordinating with Event Stewards / demo coordinators / other Officers, etc. to ensure that A&S needs are met. - supporting the Regional Coordinators wherever possible. Being a voice for their needs and desires on Council. - ensuring that various levels and styles of competitions and artisan's displays are held throughout the year, to encourage our populace to further their skills. - encouraging TUTR classes and weekend sessions wherever possible. (Note: there will be additional duties added when we have a Hartwood A&S Championship competition.) - regular access to computer email and telephone essential to this position (sometimes multiple times per day, sometimes twice a week.) Anyone interested, please send SCA and mundane names, contact information, and a brief A&S resume / application to artsci at hartwood.tirrigh.org or canzonet3 at gmail.com AND to seneschal at hartwood.tirrigh.org South and West Hartwood could really benefit from someone stepping up and coordinating a regular meeting! If I can find a deputy soon, there's 2 reporting periods and a domesday left to do that this person could see/help with the process before potentially having to do these reports solo. :) Thank you very much for considering these positions. - Cecille de Beumund, Minister of Arts and Sciences, Hartwood -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "Yes, forsooth, I will hold my tongue; so your face bids me, though you say nothing." ? From Shakespeare's King Lear, Act I, Scene iv "Forsooth, your kids aren't into Shakespeare? They will be once they see the Rebel Shakespeare Company." ? From an article by Elizabeth Gehrman in The Boston Globe, April 22, 2012 ? ? Although it is still a part of the English language, "forsooth" is now primarily used in humorous or ironic contexts, or in a manner intended to play off the word's archaic vibe. "Forsooth" is formed from the combination of the preposition "for" and the noun "sooth." "Sooth" survives as both a noun (meaning "truth" or "reality") and an adjective (meaning "true," "sweet," or "soft"), though it is rarely used by contemporary speakers. It primarily lives on in English in the verb "soothe" (which originally meant "to show, assert, or confirm the truth of") and in the noun "soothsayer" (that is, "truthsayer"), a name for someone who can predict the future. We have an important officers position still open. The best news about the position is that we have many great resources to assist both here in the Shire and at the Principality level so all you really need is an interest to help. ? Come give it a try. ? Here is a brief job description: ? The branch herald is responsible for promoting heraldry, helping branch members find suitable names and devices, if needed, and providing voice heraldry at shire events, as well as helping the seneschal or event steward run an audience. You don?t have to be able to do all of these things, just make sure that you have someone who can.? For instance, I have voice deputies to do field and town crier, though I usually do the audiences myself.? But, if your primary talent is voice, you can have a book deputy.? Or call me! ? Can you please tell me about the serving thread on a bowstring?? I?ve read that it needs two different types, and that you need a type of tool to do it, rather than by hand. ?
