Introduction to Appreciating SCA Equestrian Arts - Brianna

Tir Righ has a growing Equestrian community, with a particularly Northern flavour! all weekend you'll have seen horses and riders decked out in fantastic barding, weilding wasters, spears and lances, or riding in groups to music: if you are curious about what we've been doing, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more! Come and learn about the various things we do to bring horses to the SCA, and get a better understanding of the games we play and the rules we follow to make them fun and safe for all participants! (Demonstration rides will be by some very familiar people! Sand may be tasted!) This class will feature a brief introductory chat, followed by a narrated series of ridden demonstrations of the games and activities. And finishing with a question and answer period. As well as the basics of riding in the SCA, we will touch on the duties of the Equestrian Marshals, how one qualifies as Ground Crew or to ride, and look at how Tir Righ's nascent program is different than others elsewhere in An Tir. 1.5 hrs, $1.00. Min 3 students, max 20.

Location: by the equestrian display, outside the South western corner of the outdoor arena.

Finally... here is the latest issue of the newsletter.  Anyone wishing to 
submit something to the next newsletter please contact me asap as I have 
started on it already.  Please remember you can now submit photos without 
getting model releases from everyone in the picture... although verbal 
permission is still a good idea.  Hopefully this one will get out a bit 
faster.

The minutes for the Hartwood council will be posted soon... I had an 
incident and lost them when my computer shut down so my deputy will be 
sending me hers.  Anyone with reports to send to me should do so and they 
can be in the minutes too.  Thanks to those that did send them to me.

I know there is at least one Protegee ceremony and the dispensing of a long overdue Carp but what other surprises await. I will try to send out facebook updates as the weekend progresses.

I have a few weeks to make and gather and I think it would sure look impressive if the box came pre-filled.

Subject: [Hartwood] NMS Donations

So this has come up a few times in Council, and I haven't really done much about it this last month (which is my fault). For those who don't know, back in October the wording on the rules for when to charge NMS were changed, and became prone to mis-interpretation; we misread it, and advised the Gate for Black Knight that no, they didn't have to charge NMS. This was wrong. Now the SCA wants their NMS money, but won't allow us to cut them a check out of general funds -- they insist we need to fund raise separately.

Halima did an excellent job on this front, and managed to get more than half the fund requirements. Unfortunately, we still have $39.30 to go. If you attended Black Knight and were not at the time a member, please consider contacting me to offer a donation of the $5 we should have charged. If anyone else would like to throw a dollar or two at the fund, that would also be greatly appreciated. 

Seriously, I'll tap-dance or something. Or maybe I should just threaten to sing something at the next event if people don't pony up. ;p ALMS FOR THE POOR (poor, poor Exchequer)...

Newcomers Event, July 26-28, Barony of Seagirt

Come one, come all to the Island Newcomers event. The Barony of Seagirt and the Shire of Hartwood invite you to come out for the day or the weekend, bring your interested friends, meet some new folks and show them how much fun being a time traveler can be.

There will be plenty to do for everyone. A full day of free TUTR classes is being planned for the newcomers (and anyone else who would like to attend). We will dance! We will play games! We will sing! We will fight! We will show each other some cool projects we are working on. We will hold court. There will be a friendly game of medieval football between Seagirt and Hartwood. And of course we will have fun!

Teachers are needed: If you would like to teach please contact Mistress Halima. We would also like to organize some children?s activities. If you would like to take this on, please contact HL Tatiana.

Fighters are needed! There will be prize tournaments for heavy, rapier and archery. The onsite A&S challenge will be chivalry handkerchiefs. White linen will be supplied. Please bring sewing needles, thread and scissors. Prizes are being sought from the island artisans. If you have something amazing you have made (or would be willing to make) and would like to donate for a specific contest, please contact HL Tatiana by July 15th.

Artisans are needed! We will designate an area for you to work on projects on site. Newcomers will be given time to wander over and see what you are doing, and ask questions. If you want to participate in this, please contact HL Tatiana so we know who/what to expect. Please bring whatever you need for supplies. 

Raffle prizes are needed! The raffle will be for newcomers. Every hour throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday we will draw a name so someone can choose a prize. What kind of prizes you say? Well, anything you no longer need that is somewhat period and a newcomer would appreciate. This is an opportunity to clean out your stores of old (but serviceable) garb, bolts of fabric, feast gear, armour bits, etc. 

Fees: Adults $20 (No non-membership surcharge)
Youth (16 and under) Free. 
Family Cap: $60

Schedule: The site opens Friday at 3pm, and closes Sunday at 3pm. An activities schedule will be available at Gate.

The site is located in Cobble Hill at the Fairground. Directions to the site:
From Duncan (driving South on the TransCanada Highway): Turn right at the Cobble Hill Road traffic light (opposite Valleyview Shopping Centre and Cowichan Bay Road). Follow Cobble Hill Road to Cobble Hill village--- then follow the signs. 3550 Watson Road Cobble Hill

From Victoria (driving North on the TransCanada Highway): Turn left at Hutchinson Road (3rd traffic light after Mill Bay Centre)--- then follow the signs.

There is water on site as well as flush toilets (yay!) No ground fires. We are checking on the rules about braziers.

I?m so sorry everyone.   I completely zoned on Council today.

It was my Saturday to work and then I was at Reelay For Life from Saturday night until almost 9 this morning (awake for over 26 hours) then I went home and crashed.  My brain is still scrambled to be honest.  I?m just not able to pull all nighters any more.

Anyway, I?m very sorry I screwed up on this.  How was Council and what did I miss?

        The Queen has asked me to make a box for them to take to Pensic as a gift for the gift exchange between kingdoms. They are going to fill the box with gifts.

        I was hoping that all of you would be able to help me by adding something to the box. It can be something small even. Some pouches, inkles, coptic books, tassels, anything really.

        I have a few weeks to make and gather and I think it would sure look impressive if the box came pre-filled.

Aww - we missed you, Elizabeth.  (I was only JUST able to get there, as I had my granddaughter for the day.)
There were 7(?) of us at the meeting.  John, in one of his many hats, took minutes AND chaired.  I *think* we got quite a bit done (my attention was somewhat split between the meeting and 4-year-old - although she was very, very good, if I do say so, myself). ??
There is a Newcomers event coming up near the end of July, joining with Seagirt (I can't be there - a wedding to go to); and Halima's Peasant Revel in early October (I don't want to miss it!  Huzzahs!
