Greetings

I have one lovely volunteer to help with pre-registration for TRU classes at 
Investiture (August 22 to 23, Bowser, BC).  I really do need a few more, 
please!  I am asking for two or three hours of your time, and you must be a 
paid SCA member.  We have some wonderful classes for you, mostly 
Introduction-style classes, and we do need just a little help, to make this 
happen smoothly.

at Tir Righ August Investiture, in Hartwood.

You  *must*
have a valid SCA membership.  It's a lot to ask, I know, but we need such
folks in order to be able to offer classes.  I need people to cover two or
three hours at the table please, as I am unable to be on site myself, for
this session, regrettably.

This is a great way to meet new people, and to help the University at the
same time.

Greetings!

First, my best wishes for awesome fun go to all the good gentles  
giving their time and energy to the Viking Demo at the Royal BC Museum  
this weekend!

Second, since I'm working all weekend but still really want to shoot,  
I'm going to head out to the range briefly after work on Saturday  
evening (August 9). Not sure how long traffic will take, but I'll  
leave work around 6:15 and get to the range whenever traffic allows.  
I'll probably shoot for about an hour, then pack up all the range gear  
for SST. People are welcome to join - it will be an official (if  
brief) practice.

And third, because awesome things come in threes:

SST is coming up! At SST, Seagirt's new Marksman will be chosen! So  
come out and shoot for honour and glory and fun! And also prizes.
The new Marksman will show their skill and prowess at:
(not necessarily in this order)
1. Tournament shooting: shoot all your arrows close together and at  
the right place. Yay for accuracy and precision!
2. A mock hunt: Shoot a variety of targets at a variety of ranges.  
This may or may not include moving targets.... mwahaahahahah! Yay  
adaptability!
3. War shooting: kill the advancing foe. Or advance on a foe.  
(depending on target availability) Yay for staying alive longer than  
the other guy! (speed in killing the Foe is encouraged)

The finalists will face off in a game of Closest-To-The-Dot.

Make sure you have at least 6 arrows/bolts, or as many as you can  
safely shoot in 30 seconds. All shoots are target shoots.

Come on out to Cobble Hill August 15-17 and shoot things!

Greetings To All

At the request (and with the help) of Lady Ceridwen of Seagirt, who is
charged with welcoming and aiding newcomers, most of the classes to be held
at Investiture are Introductory.  They are not, however, limited to
newcomers!  Please see below, for complete class information.

Registration for classes is on site, and will be open for two hours in the
evening Friday, and from 9am to 2pm on Saturday.  As the Natural Dyes class
begins at 9am Saturday, if you wish to take it, I encourage you to register
Friday evening.  Please note that you will need to bring a few basic items,
if you plan to take Natural Dyes or Basic Knotwork.

As I will be regrettably absent at Investiture (August 22 ? 24, Shire of
Hartwood), I would like to dearly thank the instructors, and Ladies Sarra,
M?el, & Argolia, for taking care of registration, and Lady Cunegonda with
her awesome team, for setting everything up.

Schedule for the University of Tir Righ, at August Investiture, 2014:

Saturday

9:00am to 12pm (part one) - break - 1:00 to 4:00pm (part two)

Introduction To Natural Dyes
Instructor: His Lordship Topher MacKenzie
6 hours
Class Fee $20
Minimum 4 students/Maximum 10 students
Students need to bring **12 skeins of white or light coloured wool approx 10
yards each, Apron, Gloves, labels and water proof markers.
**One 100gr/3.5oz. ball of wool will be enough to make the 12 small skeins.

Students will get an introduction to three natural dyes, (woad, cochineal,
and turmeric) dyeing four skeins in each dye pot , achieving different
results with the use of mordants or additives.

We will walk through premordanting the wool for better adherence of the
dyes.  Preparation of the dyes through various methods such as grinding,
chopping and cooking the dye baths. Finally an after bath that will once
again offer a different colour from the the rest.

Woad was the source of the dye in Europe since Neolithic times, and it
appears that the plant was introduced into Europe for this sole purpose at
the same time as farming spread from the Middle East.  Cochineal was
introduced from Mexico to Europe following the Spanish expedition to Mexico
in 1518.  Turmeric is probably best known for its spicy flavor and the bold
yellow color it gives to curry. Along with coloring foods, it has been used
as a dye for both skin and clothing

Chivalry & Etiquette
Instructor: Baroness Letitia Talbot

Minimum 1 student/Maximum 10 students

This class is intended to assist the student to participate more
appropriately in the Current Middle Ages. Discussed will be the SCA general
behaviour including how to behave in the presence of royalty, and terms of
address.

Introduction To Dance
Instructor: Lady Athelina Grey
1 hour
No class fee

Minimum 5 students/Maximum 20 students
Students need to bring feet and ears.
Why dance? What was it for and why do we do it? What sorts of dances were
for what occasion?

Conventions of Dance. How to hold hands, the girl is always right, unless
they're improper. Be gracious and kind.

Court Dances - the Pavanne step and how to make it not terribly boring. (I
kid you - it's just boring.)

Dancing in a line or circle - A Bransle (usually Baron's Bransle, possibly
another if I feel like it). We can step from side to side!


12:30pm to 1:30pm

Introduction To Wood Carving
Instructor: His Lordship Kjartan kr?ka
1 hour
No class fee
Minimum 1 student/Maximum 2 students

Students will learn the basics of wood carving by carving a spoon.
Introduction to knife technique and basic safety.

2:00pm - 4:00pm

Charter Layout and Design
Instructor: Viscountess Thora Golvik

Minimum 1 student/Maximum 10 students

Ever wondered who makes those beautiful scroll designs? This class will give
people information on how to do charter blanks for awards, including what
things to include and what to avoid.

3:00pm to 4:00pm

Introduction To Armoured Combat

No class fee
Minimum 2 students/Maximum 10 students

- learn about necessary equipment, safety, and training;
- understand the role of the marshal (equipment and how marshals interact
with fighters);
- understand the protocol for the observer;
- be introduce to the concept of chivalry on the field;
- recognize modes of combat (tourney VS war, etc.).

Introduction To Games In the SCA

Staff Set up begins Thursday.

There are two shower stalls available.
Site is discretely damp.
There will be limited RV space available. There will be electric hookup, but there will be no grey water dumping.
Dogs are absolutely welcome, but must be on-leash and under control at all times. Owners must pick up after their dogs; bags will be available at gate.
There will be horses on site. The owners request visitors refrain from feeding the horses.

Second in the series of Investiture emails, this one is about the University of Tir Righ classes being offered.

Tir Righ August Investiture

University of Tir Righ Class Schedule:

SATURDAY

9:00am to 12pm (part one) - break - 1:00 to 4:00pm (part two)

Introduction To Natural Dyes
Instructor: His Lordship Topher MacKenzie
6 hours
Class Fee $20
Minimum 4 students/Maximum 10 students
Students need to bring 12 skeins of white or light coloured wool approx 10 yards each, Apron, Gloves, labels and water proof markers.  One 100gr/3.5oz. ball of wool will be enough to make the 12 small skeins.

Students will get an introduction to three natural dyes, (Woad, cochineal, and turmeric) dyeing four skeins in each dye pot , achieving different results with the use of mordants or additives.

We will walk through premordanting the wool for better adherence of the dyes.  Preparation of the dyes through various methods such as grinding, chopping and cooking the dye baths. Finally an after bath that will once again offer a different colour from the the rest.

Woad was the source of the dye in Europe since Neolithic times, and it appears that the plant was introduced into Europe for this sole purpose at the same time as farming spread from the Middle East.
Cochineal was introduced from Mexico to Europe following the Spanish expedition to Mexico in 1518
Turmeric is probably best known for its spicy flavor and the bold yellow color it gives to curry. Along with coloring foods, it has been used as a dye for both skin and clothing

Chivalry & Etiquette
Instructor: Baroness Letitia Talbot
2 hours
No Class Fee
Minimum 1 student/Maximum 10 students

This class is intended to assist the student to participate more appropriately in the Current Middle Ages. Discussed will be the SCA general behaviour including how to behave in the presence of royalty, and terms of address. 


10:30am to 11:30am

Introduction To Dance
Instructor: Lady Athelina Grey
1 hour
No Class Fee
Minimum 5 students/Maximum 20 students
Students need to bring feet and ears.
Why dance? What was it for and why do we do it? What sorts of dances were for what occasion?

Conventions of Dance. How to hold hands, the girl is always right, unless they're improper. Be gracious and kind.

Court Dances - the Pavanne step and how to make it not terribly boring. (I kid you - it's just boring.)

Dancing in a line or circle - A Bransle (usually Baron's Bransle, possibly another if I feel like it). We can step from side to side!


12:30pm to 1:30pm

Introduction To Wood Carving 
Instructor: His Lordship Kjartan Kraka
1 hour
No class fee
Minimum 1 student/Maximum 2 students

Students will learn the basics of wood carving by carving a spoon.  Introduction to knife technique and basic safety.

2:00 to 4:00

Charter Layout and Design
Instructor: Viscountess Thora Golvik
2 Hours
Fee: $2
Min/Max: 1/10

Ever wondered who makes those beautiful scroll designs? This class will give people information on how to do charter blanks for awards, including what things to include and what to avoid.

3:00pm to 4:00pm

Introduction To Armoured Combat
Instructor: Lord Dmitrii Ivanavitch
1 hour
No class fee
Minimum 2 students/Maximum 10 students

- learn about necessary equipment, safety, and training; 
- understand the role of the marshal (equipment and how marshals interact with fighters);
 - understand the protocol for the observer; 
- be introduce to the concept of chivalry on the field; 
- recognize modes of combat (tourney VS war, etc.).


Sunday

10:30am to 11:30am

Introduction To Games In the SCA
Instructor: Lady Athelina Grey
1 hour
Class fee $3, provides students with paper game boards, and glass game tokens.
Minumum 3 students/Maximum 8 students
Students should wear shoes appropriate for outside

Board games:
1. Fox and Geese (maybe with a couple variations?)
2. Nine Men's Morris
3. Tablero

Introduction To Rapier
Instructor: Baroness Letitia Talbot
1 hour
No Class Fee
Minimum 2 students/Maximum 10 students

- Overview of how the rapier came to be;
- learn about necessary equipment and safety 
- learn the basics of the blade;
- understand the role of the marshal (equipment and how marshals interact with fighters);
- basic overview of the different masters/countries
- learn basic stances.


11:30am to 12:30pm

Basic Knotwork - Plotting and Squiggles
Instructor: Lady Athelina Grey
1 Hour
$1
Minimum 1 Student/Maximum 8 students
Students should bring pecils with erasers

Learn how to plot out basic knotwork patterns. Follow some simple rules and your knots will always meet up. Great for drawing borders.

Scourge of Tir Righ
The Armoured Champion of Tir Righ

Scorer of Tir Righ
The Target Archery Champion of Tir Righ

	No crossbows shall be allowed in the competition, handbows only. 
	Ties - a tie on either of the qualifying shoots will result in the shoot being re-shot with the two tied archers.

	Shoot 1 - variant of the Society Seasonal Archery Competition

	For this slots shoot, the competition consists of three targets each representing a different slot: the ?vertical? slot, the ?cross arm? slot, and the ?off-set? slot. Competitors will have 4 shots at each target.

	Winner of this shoot proceeds to the final.

	Shoot 2 - Knight shoot

	For this shoot, the competition consists of 6 shots of a combat arrow at a wooden Knight.  If you do not have access to combat arrows, there will be a limited number available.  If you have combat arrows, it is requested that you bring them and be willing to loan them to any who may need them.

	Winner of this shoot proceeds to the final.

	Final Shoot to be announced on site.

Squire Tourney/Knights Invitational

Rapier Tourney/White Scarf Invitational

Mix of Six
Largess

	The theme for Investiture is 'Toys and Games'. Competitors are invited to present one or more sets of six themed or identical toys suitable for children, or simply the young at heart.


Other Activities: 

Equestrian

	There will be an equestrian demo after court, and possibly a pat-the-pony meet and greet for children afterwards.

Children & Youth Activities

	Morning activities include: Colouring, Bookmark making & Folded Paper Castles. In the afternoon there will be Large castle making and mini catapults. In addition there is a small playground on site.

Scribal

	There will be a drop-in Scribal session, as well as two scribal classes -- one on Charter Design, and one on Basic Knotwork.

Bardic

	An informal gathering, themed on Comedy. A bawdy song, a funny story, or an entertaining performance... come and laugh with us.

Guild Meetings

	Several groups will be having show and tells, or open meetings. Though not a Guild, TUTR will meet to discuss progress and TUTR's future. The Jewellers, Book Arts and Embellishers will all have a presence, schedule TBA. Have a guild you'd like to recruit for? Have a guild IDEA you'd like to establish? Let me know, and we'll try to fit you in!

Yeah, pretty much. I was surprised to discover that our Principality list -- Northern Road -- is hosted on the Kingdom site. Of course, this isn't a typical concern; having the server go down like that qualifies as an Act of God. Still, it was stressful!

Investiture is almost here!

Please note that, if you wish to take University of Tir Righ classes, 
REGISTRATION CLOSES AT 2:00PM ON SATURDAY, and there is no registration on 
Sunday.  So, for Saturday afternoon, or Sunday classes, please be sure to 
register by 2:00pm Saturday.

As the start time for Natural Dyes coincides with the opening of 
registration on Saturday, I strongly encourage anyone interested in taking 
that class to register Friday evening, so class can start on time, and 
continue uninterrupted.
