Mark April 12 and 13 on your calendar for Hartwood's annual TUTR session which will be held in South Hartwood (the mundane city of Nanaimo) central to the island and within easy reach of two ferries from the lower mainland. Site fee will be $20 for both days, including the evening revel, but not including individual class enrolment. Youth aged 12 to 18 will be charged $10; children under the age of 12 will be free (but must be supervised by an adult). Revel only fee is $10. The final class schedule and registration details will be posted shortly but will include a martial arts stream and cooking classes, along with craft classes, historical skills and SCA skills. A list of confirmed classes is posted below. Location will be the OAPO Branch #4 Hall at 2465 Labieux Road, which is three blocks from the main island highway and within walking distance of several restaurants. Parking space is available behind the building. Classes will start at 9 a.m. Saturday with a break for lunch and wrap up in the evening with a quasi-potluck feast and revel. Classes will resume Sunday at 12:30 and continue until 3:30-4 p.m. The evening revel will include shire-provided main dishes, both meat and vegetarian, with participants asked to provide side dishes and dessert. A list with suggested potluck items will be posted with the class schedule. Please label all contributions with contents. CONTESTS There will be two related contests at the revel. The first will be for an example of a largesse item - no documentation required but medieval/renaissance in appearance. Attendees will be asked to vote for the item they would most like to receive, with the winner receiving the most votes. The second will be for a description of how to create a largesse item with short accompanying documentation. No item is required: just directions on how it would be made including required materials, equipment, costs and time required per item. Judging will be on clarity of directions, cost and time effectiveness, and historical appropriateness. No camping space is available but limited billeting space can be provided - please reserve in advance by contacting Elspeth ( elspeth at pawprintery.net). ------------------------- CONFIRMED CLASSES: Drop/suspended spindle spinning Chain maille basics Haversacks Reading Runes Writing Runes Making Runes Inkle Weaving Tablet Weaving Mentoring A Newcomer (not the actual class title) Wreaths and Ribbon Roses Arrow-Making Medieval Pasta Have Your Cake and Paint It Too Yogurt cheese demo - 30 minutes (not the actual class title) Making A Paternoster Introduction to Fingerloop Braiding Fun With Personae Norse Wire Weaving Intermediate Fingerloop Braiding Introduction To Latin Introduction to the Lute and It's Music Silk Banner Painting --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Seagirt is in the process of selecting a new pair to take the baronial seat, and we should keep at least half an eye on what's going on down there. It's the last section of this forwarded message, Non-residents of Seagirt, that may be of interest to us -- especially as we have several Seagirtian ex-pats amongst us. The two candidate pairs are, in no particular order: Morgaine Essex & Hucbald ap Urp Letitia Talbot & Connall MacLagmayn Their resumes can be found here: http://seagirt.antir.sca.org/baronial%20campaign/baronial%20candidates.htm At investiture I spoke with Letitia and Morgaine, putting them on the spot with no preparation at all (because I'm terrible that way) and asked them what they thought of island unity. Both want to travel more; Letitia would like to see more friendly competition, perhaps games and sports between us. Morgaine would like to work to encourage more pomp and circumstance, to create that magical atmosphere. This isn't to say that one wouldn't pursue both ideas, but this was the first thing that popped to their minds. It's two very different focuses, both of them valuable. So if you have a strong opinion one way or another, speak with them at Daffodil, and write to the King and Queen (CC the Prince and Princess.) ~ Cunegonda Begin forwarded message: > From: Tami Hayes > Date: March 13, 2014 7:54:39 PM PDT > To: Rocks > Subject: [rocks] Seagirt Baronial Polling Information > > Greetings, everyone. > > Regarding the selection process for Seagirt's next Baron and Baroness, I have included below instructions for members who will be at Daffodil, members who are unable to attend Daffodil, non-members, and non-residents of Seagirt. > > MEMBERS ATTENDING DAFFODIL > The members' poll will be open from the end of opening court to the opening of the afternoon court. Because surely their reign will be eternal, right? Right. Posted on Facebook from Uilliam: ****************** Let it be known that an historic moment has occurred this day. After decades of ineffective and needless bloodshed, His Excellency Eideard, Baron of Seagirt, and I have finally settled the matter and declared an end to the war. From this day forward, the Baronies of Lions Gate and Seagirt are at peace. This peace shall be complete and unilateral, and shall hold until the world end, or as long as Eideard and I bear these Baronial circlets. To share in this new era of peace, Her Excellency Caitrina and I have invited the Baron and Baroness of Seagirt, along with Their people to a friendly Sealion summer picnic on the weekend of the 23 - 25 of May. Their Lordships Hucbald and Connall from Seagirt expressed concern that the roads and seas between their Barony and ours are treacherous, and that a sizable force should accompany Their Excellencies. But I'm sure it will all be fine. - Baron Uilliam ****************** Well, I'd already hoped to have a little sunshade area for Hartwoodian's to gather under and share lunch and the like. You won't have a full set of arrows in 2 hrs. The actual class where you make you arrows takes a full day (or longer) depending on how many jigs we have and how many students. Not sure who is making your arrows, but I know some of the companies were being very slow at delivering the shafts. In fact John had ordered some supplies and finally he called and they had cancelled his order without notifying him. He then called the company that makes the shafts directly. Or maybe some life issues had occurred. You might want to contact them and see what is the hold up. All of these classes are taught by Sir Thorwulf Bjornsson & Her Ladyship Wulfwyn of Meduseld, and promise to be terrific learning experiences. Note that these classes can benefit new and experienced fighters, and that the Intro To Society Combat class is a wonderful class for those who are thinking about getting into armoured/heavy combat.
