shaw.ca (Jean Clark) Date: Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:00:14 -0700 Subject: [Hartwood] Hartwood's Spring UTR Message-ID: <001f01d07667$8332adb0$89980910$@shaw.ca> Greetings Everyone, It was a busy weekend for all involved in this year's UTR, but now that we've all had a chance to get a little rest I would like to say thanks to a few people. Please forgive me if I missed anyone, there were so very many people helping that it was difficult to get everyone down. I honestly believe that everyone there helped in one way or another. I would like to start by thanking two people who were vital to the running of this event. Their Ladyships Doireann and Cunegonda. What can I say that can even approach how much these two did to ensure the success of this event. Cunegonda is organization incarnate. She had the paperwork, money and little details so well in hand, she was also able to find time to help with set up, lunch and clean up. She (and Doireann) were also up late Saturday making sure the finances were all in order. I am in awe, and very thankful we had you there. Dori not only found the time in her busy life to organize all the teachers and classes but she also posted the copy for me when I couldn't, fielded many questions from teachers, participants and a disorganized event steward and calmed me down when I was stressing out. At the event she organized the toasts and wrote down who did what so I wouldn't forget anyone. Despite hurting herself helping set up, she also helped with cleanup. all the while apologizing for how little she was doing J I'm not sure if I should smack her for thinking she should have done more, or make her a thank you treat. I would know like to thank a couple of ladies who were there at the start and at the end. literally and figuratively. My co- steward HL Marina, went over the paperwork with me leading up the event and took care of things when I was down with that horrible flu. She took me out to tea and helped me with my what-to-do lists and event proposal. She also did the tokens, got the decorations, helped with set up and in the kitchen, ran errands, replaced the signs that were nicked, and took the same signs down when we were leaving. Lady Symmone, our fair Seneschal, nagged me when I needed it and answered my questions when I asked her. She was one of the first people to arrive to help set up and was one of the last people to leave after clean up. And speaking of clean up. Someone commented that they had never seen so many people who stayed for cleanup, and I have to say that I agree. Many hands make light work and it only took a bit over an hour to get the hall back in shape after it ended. In addition to those already mentioned, Ladies Brenna, Aniko, Gwynafel, Fjorleif, Katrina, Anna-Jane, Sara, Halima, Ulf, Edward and 'Arold helped with hall cleanup. This included carrying chairs from the gym to the boiler room. Lords 'Arold, Edward and Ulf earned our heartfelt thanks by lugging those huge heavy tables around. Hazzah to you all. It should also be noted that the wonderful Lords Seamus and 'Arold were the ones who dragged the tables out there when we set everything up. Others who I haven't already mentioned who helped with set up were Edward, Seamus, Anne, Brenna and Anna-Jane. Thank you all. When my concession staff were unable to attend for personal reasons (a surprise Grandma visit), I ended up without staff to run the kitchen at lunch. A few people offered to help and in addition to those already mentioned, lady Aniko (who did a great newsletter btw) pitched right in and helped get the food to the people. It was really appreciated. I would also like to thank Lord Roberto, who despite only being able to attend the potluck, put up the signs for the event. Unfortunately, they looked so great some non-SCA person decided that they wanted to play with them too and there was some confusion with directions. Thank you to Lady Erin, who wasn't there, but who let us use her table cloths and offered to wash them too. I would like to also thank the wonderful people who camped in in the hall not only kept an eye on things for me, but who also managed to be very tidy. And we all are thankful for the wonderful teachers who dedicated their time and travelled so far to teach us. What would we do without you? Well.have a very boring non-productive weekend I suspect. I am sure I am missing someone or something, so let me know if I did. It wasn't on purpose. my brain was pretty much mush by the end of the weekend. Take care everyone, and catch up on your sleep. Please forgive me if I missed anyone, there were so very many people helping that it was difficult to get everyone down. I honestly believe that everyone there helped in one way or another. ************************************** My dear lady, I didn?t know whether to blush or giggle, so I did a bit of both! Thank you so much for your very kind words. I want to add my eternal thanks to all of you who participated as well. Our teachers are always so gracious and wonderful, and our students so enthusiastic! I was amazed and very grateful to all of you already mentioned, who did so much to help with setup and cleanup. You all really showed the spirit of our Society. Elizabeth, you worked so hard, before the event, at the event, and after. I don?t know where you get your seemingly endless energy from, but it is much appreciated, and many of us would like to know your secret! Thank you very, very much for putting on this event, so that we could all increase our knowledge, make new friends, and just have a very memorable weekend. Not only for the usual Event Steward jobs, which are enough, but also for making sure we all had a delicious lunch, and for doing such a lovely job cleaning the kitchen of the hall, before the event started. That?s a LOT of work! One of many highlights of my weekend was when I stood up at the feast, to try to thank Her Ladyship Cunegonda and Lord ?Arold for the wonderful registration system they designed, along with Cunegonda?s sister Alice, and for once again doing the input, upkeep, and general management of the registration page. But, it didn?t quite turn out that way. I stood up and said, ?I would like to thank Cunegonda and ?Arold....? But the applause and cheers began immediately, before I could say why! It was clear that everyone already knew why, and an explanation was unnecessary. I?m looking very forward to next year?s Spring UTR in Hartwood (many teachers have already approached with ideas and plans), and all of the sessions here and elsewhere, between now and then. "[Lawrence] Tanter ? was the first voice to stand out among the bedlam when the Lakers came from behind to beat Boston in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals. He said simply in his stentorian way, 'Number 16.'" ? Mike Bresnahan, Los Angeles Times, March 14, 2015 Did You Know? The Greek herald Stentor was known for having a voice that came through loud and clear. In fact, in the Iliad, Homer described Stentor as a man whose voice was as loud as that of fifty men together. Stentor's powerful voice made him a natural choice for delivering announcements and proclamations to the assembled Greek army during the Trojan War, and it also made his name a byword for any person with a loud, strong voice. Both the noun stentor and the related adjective stentorian pay homage to the big-voiced warrior, and both have been making noise in English since the early 17th century.
