It's possible that the token announcement got obscured in my posting earlier -- because I only have two recommendation emails at the moment. So here's a deadline, so scribes and artisans have a tiny amount of lead time to create what's needed. You have ONE WEEK to email me your recommendations for Sable Hound, and Stags Mark. Please include your SCA name, their SCA name, the token you are recommending them for, and why. Sable Hound: As hounds are symbols of loyalty and partnership, we've chosen tthem to represent appreciation for service. For those within our shire who give us strength and prosperity with their time and efforts, please recommend them for the Sable Hound token. Stags Mark: Hartwood often benefits from the assistance and efforts of those from afar. The hoof print recognizes those from outside the shire that have left their mark upon us. Email is seneschal at hartwood.tirrigh.org. Please send recommendations by Friday Sept 9th. Cunegonda Seneschal of Hartwood -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you can't make the event itself (Saaaaaad) you will NOT be charged to attend council. Everyone is welcome! Sunday, Sept 18 10 AM 2916 Macaulay Rd, Black Creek Some very important topics: - Spring TUTR Bid and Budget. We need one, so we can start getting instructors to book time off. - Officer Positions are coming available. Seneschal, Minister of Arts and Sciences, and Master of Stables are all looking for applications. As Seneschal, I am hoping to convince Council to approve some Seneschal & Exchequer training in November. (No promises -- Council must agree!) But if accepted, that would involve a trip to Oregon for top-level instruction - on offer are leadership skills, confusing policies made clear and simple, and terrific comradarie -- it makes such a difference when you meet the boss face to face and have a good laugh. If you are interested in the position, then don't hesitate! Come on board now. Cunegonda Seneschal of Hartwood -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "Kicking back after another fantastic SCA event. The rain of pending doom held off for most of the day and we even managed to bask in a bit of sunlight as we played though the days scheduled activities. Huge thanks to Archos Aline my archery MIC, Lord Ulf my thrown weapons MIC, Lord Sextus my heavy MIC, HL Alessandra my rapier MIC, Archos Aline again for the family activities including an amazing hunkerdown tournament, Mistress Halima for the embellisher's challenge, Thorkell and Lady Margarette for organizing and sitting many long hours at gate. Lastly to Lady Gwynafel and HL Nicola for Bardic. As you might have guessed by this list of thanks so many people were involved in making this a successful outing. Many thanks to all, to those who participated, and to the many who just braved the forecasted rain to attend. Thanks all. John Mail-Macandrew " In addition, my gratitude to those who travelled to be with us, to everyone who entered the competitions, and to my amazing team of battle scribes who worked so hard to help me make people get teary. (More on that below) Bardic in the inn was lovely ? almost as lovely as the soup offered there Friday night and Sunday afternoon, which was amazing and delicious. There was a good chat in there about Embellishment, some heraldry conversation, and board games. (Warning: Elexia is a fast learner, and kicked my butt twice at 9 Mens Morris.) We had several enthusiastic newcomers, some of whom were so well dressed we thought they were just visiting from another branch. Reminded me of Giovanna! *** The Championships themselves were terrific fun. In Archery, they shot at a flower-shaped target, shot combat arrows at a Black Knight from behind a Pavise shield, and had an elimination shoot with balloons representing their ?lives?. The winners of each of these qualifiers ? Lord Harold, Lady Aniko, and Archos Aline respectively ? went to the finals, which was a grouping shoot. Aniko victorious! The Armoured championship was terrific to watch, with a few double-kills, chivalry on fine display, and a final between Lord Azemar and Lord Wulfgar once Sir Liam wore them out a little. Wulfgar victorious! Huzzah to the new champions of Hartwood, Lady Aniko (Archery), and Lord Wulfgar (armoured)! My gratitude to Lady Miranda and Lord Attius (and Lord Azemar) for such entertaining tourneys. ? so thats two champions in one household. Talons Rest is a well protected keep. ;) Secondary competitions included: Best Introduction (Sir Liam), and Chivalry award (Sextus). We had three Rapier fighters, and Master (ack, what?s the honourary for a Master of Defense?) Godfrey von Ravensburg took it. We had a challenge issued from across the water, and competed with Fjordland in Thrown Weapons. While we won overall, it was only by the skin of our teeth ? Hartwood had 37 throwers, while they had 26. We had the top female scorer, they had the top male scorer ? but only by a few points. Our average was 5.49, but they nipped at our heels with a 5.39. Well matched indeed! The evening Hunkerdown tourney was enjoyed by all those young at heart; ultimately Sextus bested John in a show-down that looked like a pair of professional Hunkerdown athletes. *** This event we unveiled some of the new shire tokens. In 3 weeks a group of battle scribes designed, worded, calligraphed and painted 14 scrolls, and crafted 4 different tokens, listed below: Stag Tag: One of the Old Hartwood tokens, it has been slightly modified to include those who move to the shire and fight for us as well. It?s been expanded to include all contact sports; Armoured, Cut and Thrust, and Rapier. Lord Azemar de Toulouse was inducted as #30. Raven Tag: Inspired by the Stag Tag, this is for Target Arts: Archery, Thrown Weapons, and eventually Equestrian. Like the Stag Tag, you must have your own Equipment and have participated in a team-based competition for Hartwood. #1 John MacAndrew #2 Aline de Seez #3 Elizabeth MacAndrew (Formerly Miranda) #4 Halima al-Rakkasa #5 Melles Aniko #6 Harold of Hartwood (There are four additional eligible members who will hopefully be awarded at Yule.) Sable Hound: This is our acknowledgement of service to the shire. This was a hard one for me, as I was given more recommendations than I could arrange scrolls for in the one week we had left, and every one of them deserved it. There will definitely be more awarded at Yule. Recipients include: Halima al-Rakkasa, Aline de Seez, John MacAndrew, Melles Aniko, and Ulf Traeskaerer. Stags Mark: This is a token of our gratitude to those from outside the shire who have left their mark on us. The recipient was not present, so I?ve kept it and will perhaps give out two at Yule. In addition to those tokens we?ve already unveiled, Yule we will debut the Swan Tag (A&S), the Lure (Helping the shire grow by working with Newcomers/encouraging activities), and renewing the Exemplar (courtesy/chivalry/hounour/kindness ? the ideals of the SCA). Recommendations for all of the above are requested. Yours, Cunegonda van den Bossche Seneschal of Hartwood -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Pending the Navy League's approval, we hope to have the same site again for this year. We're also pleased to announce that the position of A&S Mistress has been filled. Lady Sigr?n has agreed to step up into the job at our AGM. Seneschal, Master of Stables, and Master of Blades continue to look for successors. Travel has been approved for two individuals to carpool to the Exchequer/Seneschal symposium in Oregon, in November. Should I have a deputy by that point, I will be sending them. Deadline is October Council (Though you had better have your passport/enhanced ID at that point) to get in on the excellent leadership training and networking this offers. They manage to make complicated things seem simple! The office of Chief Scribe has been established. Mistress Halima was appointed on the fly, and it is because of her efforts that so many individuals were adequately inspired to produce those charters and tokens. There is a budget that has been approved to create loaner equipment (scribal gold key?) so beginners may try their hand at painting charters for the Shire, Principality, or Kingdom. Finally, Lady Symonne is looking for some assistance for Yule. TOKENS: I am need some ideas for tokens and someone to make them. Please contact me if you are willing to do them and we will discuss. PRIZES: I would love to have a couple of Prizes for a Filk contest I am hoping will get some entries. DECORATION: I have some idea's for decorations but would love to hear from others if they have ideas as well. Please send me any ideas you may have. I am hoping the painted walls will be there (Aline?) GIFT EXCHANGE: The Christmas gift exchange will be happening again. I would like to have someone to head this up on the night of just to make sure it is done fairly. DETAILS: The event will be held at Errington Hall. The feast will be a potluck; Judy will be organizing and will post closer to the date. Dogs are permitted in the hall, but must be on leash. Activities include: - the Bardic Championship - awarding of the Craftsman Championship (held previously at TUTR) - a for-fun bardic competition (SCA filk done to a christmas tune; the filk does not need to be christmas/yule related although it must be SCA) - an A&S competition (an item representing your culture?s Winter Festival symbol) - Gwynafel?s largess challenge - Gift Exchange - Possible winter tourney, depending on interest - awarding of the Exemplar - awarding Tokens - Membership Treasure Chest draw The event Steward and her team will post more about it as it comes up, but that?s a pretty full schedule right there! Here is some of what was said about those who received the Sable Hound this weekend: ?????? Halima: ?She is very encouraging and helpful not only with gate but also keeping us focussed and true on our SCA journeys.? ?There are so many reasons why this Lady should have this award, her teaching, her willingness to undertake things that need to be done. She steps up whenever needed, and she is approachable. She is knowledgeable and one of my heroes.? Aline: ?For all her contributions of time and also her work and efforts with helping with the children of Hartwood" ?Aline always puts forth her ideas and her thoughts, ? she climbed onboard for the TW Marshals when it was decided that we were bringing them up, she is always willing to help out anyone with information, and is very knowledgeable, she never makes anyone feel left out or apart. She is a kind soul that has embraced us wholly.? ?For helping to transform the shire with her experience, enthusiasm, friendship and sense. If it?s Archery, painting, or managing an event, she facilitates other?s participation with her own very hard (often behind-the-scenes) work.? Aniko: ?Although ? relatively new to the SCA and Hartwood (she has) jumped off the deep end into service. (She) would be an excellent leader and inspiration to others in receiving their Sable Hound. ? ?(We) cried when she said she was leaving us, why? because she was/is such a warm and giving person. She found her place amongst us and was not afraid to try out things and then teach them to the rest of us. She was enthusiastic about it all, running the best newcomers we've ever had.? ** Note, she?s not leaving us! She?s just very, very remote. South-SOUTH Hartwood. ;P ** John: ?For being an inspiration to archers and ALWAYS quietly helping and giving on the sidelines? ?I want to say John should get a sable Hound he does alot for out shire and asks for nothing back.? ?? He is one of the hearts of Hartwood, and if he left us we would all feel it immensely. Why? because he is involved, he is supportive (If you know what to ask) and sometimes things would not happen without him. He is a committed member of Hartwood and for that he deserves this award.? Ulf: ?For being a cheerful, helpful, starting COW from a concept to an amazing event" ?? cooking up a storm for several events (taking over for Morraine when she broke her leg comes to mind which was for the Barony of Seagirt). (He) is ready to help any way (he) can at any time and often drives from Nanaimo to the Courtenay area to do so. ? ?He would anything for the Shire as he loves it to his core. He has built things, gathered things, traveled places, all on his own time and dime to see that the Shire has a comprehensive list of "Stuff". He has moved things, put up and taken down signs late into the night, and will do whatever needs to be done. He has really come out of his quiet shell to see that Hartwood is successful in whatever she attempts.? ?????? These words are important. Volunteer burnout is real, but you would be surprised how refreshing a kind word and a ?thank you? can be ? it isn?t why any of us work so hard for this community, but it is an incredible feeling to know you are seen, and appreciated. The truth is that many of you deserve this recognition, and -I- thank you, but the Sable Hound isn?t about my gratitude; it?s the Shire?s. So look at those around you, see them, and give me your words to offer them. Our gratitude can give someone else strength. It was indeed a wonderful event! So much happened in a short period of time, and yet there was very little overlap! I very much enjoyed the Embellishers' Guild chat, sharing what I know about the guild and how to participate, giving examples, and generally letting people know that -any- embellishment could be suitable. We had Donna Diamante to show some of her skills, as well, broadening the inspirational pieces. Kudos to our hosts, providing sustenance on the Friday night, and again on Sunday noon; the Inn was well-used whenever the weather turned dark and/or wet! Kudos to Master John, event steward, and everyone who contributed, in a small or big way, to making this an event to remember! (Special thanks to Lady Miranda, Master John, and Lord Harold for their assistance with my camp. Because of their help to set up and take down, I could stay warm and dry no matter the decrees of the weather!) He is one of the hearts of Hartwood, and if he left us we would all feel it immensely. > > > Cunegonda van den Bossche > Seneschal of Hartwood > _______________________________________________ > Hartwood mailing list > Hartwood at tirrigh.org > http://mail.tirrigh.org/mailman/listinfo/hartwood_tirrigh.org > > Website: http://hartwood.tirrigh.org/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After the discussions at our August Council, it was put to me to come up with an A&S competition! and with the help of my Lord Ulf Treteljgar I have determined what it is to be. **This year I would like to see something created for/from your personal persona's life. Something that represents your persona's relationship with their celebration of their type of Yule/Christmas/Hanukkah! It can be in any medium, but must be a created by you.** *No documentation is required, BUT a small write up or printed page to explain the significance to your personae, their beliefs and something about the holiday it's self. If you wish you may present this information verbally.* An example might be, if your personae is Jewish and has a special relationship with Hanukkah, then they may create a Menorah out of bread and have candles lit at the ends of the tines. In this same example the Menorah could be made of etched metal with lit candles. Please contact me at wmaiuro at telus.net if you wish to compete! There are prizes to be had!
