By The Light of A Northern Star....

Nobody probably needs to be told about the pain that An Tir is going through right now. Voices are again raised over perceived injustices and differences of opinion as to just what those injustices may or may not be and who did or did not do them.
Sad really.
But this does bring up thoughts of "Codes of Conduct" and "Alternative Sanctions." These are actively pursued topics by interested parties.
A proposed "Code of Conduct" has been drawn up by Laurellen de Brandevin and Baron Yusuf. These can be reviewed and commented upon at http://www.vertetsable.com/magna/codeofconduct.htm
I highly recommend that you do so.
On the topic of sanctions , The SCA Board of Directors has been presented with a proposal by The Grand Council. At this present time, the only sanctions as allowed by Corpora are: At the Kingdom Level, Level 1 and 2 banishments; and for The Board, it's revocation/denial of membership. But this proposal suggests other possibilities, and as these have consequences other than what we may be used to, I recommend that you also check out http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/ and look up the relevant proposal. Note that The BOD is requesting commentary on this no later than April 1st, 2002.
And since it also seems to be in the news at this time, the so-called Pennsic Accords are also viewable at this last site. Commentary on this is also being sought by The BOD.
Kindly take some time out and look it over.
Lord Erasmus The Traveller, GdS

From The Crown Principality Constable

For those who know me, and to those I have not yet met, I
send joyous greetings.
My name is Duncan Darroch and I have been elevated by
Lord Khaidu from being his deputy to Constable for the CP of the
North. I look forward to working closely with the current constables,
seneschals and those who wish to be constables in our great Crown
Principality. I will do my best to travel as much as I can to as
many of the Shires as I am able (my budget permitting).
Lord Khaidu, who is now our Kingdom Constable, has put
together a training manual. When this has all been finalized we will be
setting up classes throughout the CP to warrant our constables. At this
time I am confirming those who already hold the position of Constable
for their branch and making note of those who wish to become
constables. If you could please forward me your SCA and modern
information for my records, it would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to talking to everyone and meeting as
many of you as I can.
Yours In Service to the Dream,
Duncan Darroch, AoA

From The Crown Principality Marshal

Greetings on and all,
I'm reminded of the Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times." I guess we are all cursed. Be that as it may, a new fighting season is fast approaching. Daffodil is little over a month away, so check over your gear and make sure everything works and is still legal. At 12th Night the new edition of the ABC's was issued and is now available on line at antir.sca.org. All fighters and marshals should have a copy ( at least they should have read it). So get your copy and
study it carefully. Make sure your authorizations are in order. In order to be properly authorized you need to be on the List Mistresses roster. This roster will soon be available on line as well. If you are not on it you are not authorized, if you are not authorized you cannot fight.
I hope to see most of you on the field this coming year.
Sir Griffin ap Bedwyr,
Crown Principality Marshal, The North

WANTED - New Kingdom Lists Board

The Kingdom Office of Lists is seeking a new Kingdom Lists Board. The purpose of the Lists Board is to display the pairings of the bouts during a tournament. Each combatant has a miniature shield which shows their device or coat of arms. This shield is then displayed next to the shield of the person they are to fight. A re-design of what is currently used now is needed.
The List Board is an important piece of Kingdom regalia needed to ensure the smooth running of each Crown Tournament. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone (or a group of someones) to show off their skills and talents through the making of this piece of equipment. It is a great way to provide a service to the Kingdom.

All bids must be in writing and must contain the following:
- description of proposed design
- drawings of proposed design
- any documentation if design is period
- list of materials
- budget

Specifications:
- lightweight (can be carried by one smaller woman)
- easily transportable (not too many pieces, nor too
awkward to pack)
- durable - must be able to endure all weather
conditions: heavy rain, strong winds (and yes, even
snow)
- flexible - used both outside and indoors (no tent
stakes)
- no taller than 7 feet - ideally at eye-level, or
just above people's heads
- must be able to incorporate the current painted wood
shields (size: 2 and 3/4 inches wide x 4 inches long)
(other shield designs will be considered, however keep
in mind the current shield's useability and history)
- cup hook system is unusable due to strong winds
blowing the shields off the cuphooks (perhaps magnetic?)
- must be able to display 8 fields indicated by colour:
(checky, yellow, white, black, blue, red, green, purple)
- must be able to display 7 pairings on each field
(that's 14 fighter's shields)

Bid Deadline: March 31, 2002
Delivery Deadline: May Crown (May 17, 2002)

For more information, or to submit at bid, please contact:

O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O*O
From The Kingdom Deputy for Incipient Branches

Even after six years of the existence of this office, there still are misunderstandings on how the process of making a new branch works. At this time, I hope to clear up some misconceptions.
There is no such thing as a protoincipient branch. This is a fancy way to refer to a group of people compiling the paperwork for an incipient branch. They have no status in the SCA and should not be holding fight practices, events or in any way referring to themselves as part of the SCA. If you know of a group doing this, please ask them to stop because they may find themselves having legal problems.
An incipient branch is a group who has submitted the proper paperwork to the New Branch Deputy. The requirements for an incipient branch are:
1. At least 5 subscribing members
2. At least 3 officers, including a Seneschal,
Herald and either a Marshal or a Minister of Arts
and Sciences
3. Consensus among members in the area-favoring
establishment of the proposed Branch.

Required Paperwork:
1. A letter from an established branch, in good
standing with the kingdom, stating it will act as sponsor.
2. A letter of petition from the members of the
proposed branch.
3. A list of zip/postal codes claimed.
4. A map of the area claimed.
5. If the proposed branch is within area claimed by
another branch, a letter form the established
branch seneschal making clear that the branch is
giving up the area and the zip/postal codes.
6. A completed new branch application form.
7. Copies of the proposed branch officer's
membership cards.
8. A completed Job Acceptance/Change of Officer
form for the proposed seneschal.

The Paperwork MUST be submitted to the New Branch Deputy. Sending the paperwork anywhere else will only result in delays.
Once the paperwork has been received and processed, the group will be notified they have achieved Incipient Status, and proper notifications will be made.
An Incipient Branch is still not an official branch of the Society. It is a group practising to be a branch. A permanent branch must sponsor their events and they cannot handle money. By
Kingdom Law, an incipient branch will be evaluated every year for three years. If, an incipient branch cannot advance to permanent status after three years it will be dissolved. Exceptions will be granted to incipient branches that have been functioning well but can't yet satisfy all requirements, through no fault of their own, e.g. name approval.

Requirements for permanent status are:
1. A name registered with the College of Arms
2. The Office of Exchequer
3. A letter from the populace asking for permanent
status
4. A letter of Recommendation form the sponsoring
branch Seneschal
5. A letter of recommendation from the Baron and
Baroness of the sponsoring branch, if Applicable
6. A letter from the Regional/Principality Seneschal

After the New Branch Deputy receives the paperwork the paperwork, it will be reviewed and sent to the Kingdom Seneschal. The Kingdom Seneschal will consult with the Crown for approval of the elevation. As soon as there is word from the Kingdom Seneschal, the Branch will be contacted with the decision. The Branch can then make arrangements for a formal elevation ceremony with Their Majesties. The New Branch Deputy will notify the relevant officers the branch has achieved permanent status.
I hope this will clear up some misinformation and make the creation of new branches a smoother operation

Feast of the Raven,Feb. 23, 2002
Ravens Key/Hartwood (Port Alberni, BC)

Shake off the dreary darkness of the season and come dance and be merry. The doors will open at 2:30 pm. There will be much feasting, gaming, and singing as always. Dancing shoes are also a must. This year we will be expanding the garb contest to include anything "dark with shiny bits", for as we all know, black comes in many shades of darkness. We encourage beginners as well as advanced sewers and would really like to see children's garb this year as well.
Since last year's on site calligraphy contest was such a success we will be having it again this year. This time around we will award two prizes...one for skill at calligraphy and one for skill and originality of writing. Participants will once again be asked to recite their pieces.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies, as what we have available will be limited.
And now for something completely different...someone was complaining that they haven't seen a "cloven" fruit in years. It was suggested that as a way to rectify the situation that a "most decorative cloved fruit" contest should be held. This contest does not have to be limited to oranges and lemons and points will be given for originality.
Anyone wishing to inquire about merchanting, tickets or billeting please contact:

Get into the one on your right because you'll be turning right just past the 7 eleven at the first set of lights (10th Ave). Follow the road down past one set of lights and turn right at the next set of lights. This is Rogers. The Kin Hut is to your left. Signs will be posted.
Note: If you arrive at the College you've gone too far and need to turn around.

Kingdom Heralidc Symposium, Mar 23-24, 2002
Barony of Gymm Mere (Olympia, WA)
http://www.easystreet.com/~rafaella/ATKHS2002.htm

Sound the Trumpets!!
Announcing the 2002 An Tir Heraldic Symposium!
We Want You!! Yes, You!!

** New info: There will be no weapons allowed on site, it is co-located with the Shelton Police Department, and they take a dim view of folks wearing swords wandering around their parking lot...fancy that! Eating utensils are OK, but please be very conscious of what you wave about
during the rest of the day.

Discover the secrets of what heralds and scribes REALLY do! The An Tir College of Heralds invites you to join us at the Kingdom Heraldic Symposium, March 23-24, 2002, hosted by the Barony of Glymm Mere.
The best part is you don't have to be a herald or a scribe to attend! This event is open to everyone -- especially welcome are folks who want to learn about all the fun things heralds and scribes do in a relaxed setting.
By special request, a new class is being offered, "What Their Excellencies Meant to Say " It is designed for non-heralds in particular, and will feature tips for working with court heralds at all levels -- Baronial, Principality, Kingdom, and Known World. Nobles and those who aspire to Crown or Coronet will get valuable insights on what they'll need from the herald, what the herald needs from them, and much more. Retinue members and scribes will benefit from this class, too. New heralds just starting to do court will find this a treasure trove of helpful ideas.
On Saturday (March 23) we have a full day of classes planned for scribes, for book heralds, for court heralds, for field heralds, for heraldic artists, and for illuminators. Get expanded information on the classes listed below at the Symposium website.
To pre-register for a class (strongly encouraged) contact Baron David of Moffat, E-mail amoffatamoffat@juno.com. Classes are $1 per class to cover the handout, to be paid at gate in addition to the site fee. Additional fees for supplies may be collected by the instructor(s).
Sunday activities will include a Black Lion staff meeting, followed by a Laurel Roadshow, and Lion's Blood (Kingdom submissions herald) decision meeting in the afternoon. The Laurel Roadshow and Lion's Blood decision meetings are open to all. The locations for these meetings will be announced on site.
The Classes: (Instructors names in parentheses)
Track 1: Basic Book Heraldry (Elisabeth de Rossignol), Basic Voice/Field Heraldry (Ciaran Cluana Ferta), Basic Protocol Heraldry (Beatrice Domenici della Campana), and What Their Excellencies Meant to Say (the new class) (David of Moffat, Natasha Orionova and Kateryn of Falconkeep).

Track 2: Name Pronunciation Tips for Court and Field Heralds (Ciaran Cluana Ferta), Heralds in History (Zenobia Naphtali), Researching and Preparing a Scroll (Cystennin Ap Gereint), and How to do Effective Commentary (Teceangl Bach).

Track 3: May the Furs be With You (Iago ab Adam), Gottingen Model Book Illumination (Cystennin Ap Gereint), Egg Tempera Painting (Aelana Cordovera), and Silk Banner Painting (Adrianna the Fierce).

Directions: From I-5 north or south, take Exit 104 (Highway 101). (This busy interchange is just slightly south of downtown Olympia, and is steeply banked from either direction. Please be careful!) Shortly after you pass Mud Bay, exit to the right to stay on 101. (Do not exit at Mud Bay.) Travel on Highway 101 to Shelton, and take the first Shelton exit (Highway 3), turn right at bottom of ramp. Turn left at Cota Street (4th stoplight), continue 5 blocks to Civic Center on the
left. There are approximately 80 parking spaces outside the Civic Center.
The Shelton Inn (motel) is within easy walking distance, as are food establishments including a coffee shop next to the motel. The phone for motel reservations and information is (360) 426-4468 or (800) 451-4560. A variety of lodgings is also available in the Olympia/Tumwater area. (Shelton is about 25 miles from Olympia.)
Site fee includes the potluck feast with the Barony providing the main dish. There is a kitchen on site for refrigerated storage and reheating prepared dishes. Please bring a potluck contribution to feed 10 people.
Site opens 8 AM 23 March. Site fee $7, classes $1 per class, please make checks payable to Barony of Glymm Mere, SCA Inc. Autocrat: Natasha Orionova (Scotty Zdarsky), (360) 493-6084 (before
11PM), E-mail orionova@juno.com

Silver Whale Persona Development Competition, June 8, 2002
Seagirt (Victoria, BC)

Once again the Barony of Seagirt is hosting our annual persona competition. This year Silver Whale will be held on June 8 (site tba). The competition is an opportunity to present an authentic
and logical persona you have created and who could have existed before the year 1650. (This is not to be a recreation of an historic, fiction, or SCA character). The competition is open to both men and women.
This is not a competition to win against others, but to accomplish a goal of presenting a successful piece of theatre. This means bringing together and presenting everything - from knowledge, bearing and attitude to props and aids such as food, costume(s), skills and activities needed to make the persona a whole, living, believable person.
Interested in getting more information? Please contact Tatiana Alexievna by email or phone and an information package and application form will be forwarded to you. Applications must be received no later than May 8, 2002 in order to be accepted for this year’s competition.

Because I Can......

I had an event copy sent to me that was for an event a few months down the road. I didn't have room, and since it was still 4 months away, I didn't worry about it.
No problem. I'll put it in when it's time....
Then, I got this:

THE (OTHER)BARON'S BIRTHDAY April 19, 2002
Barony of Lions Gate Vancouver, BC

"Come gather around me, dear Travellers surround me, Hark now to the birthday of Steffano, the Peer. We may well astound you, confound you, spellbound you, With Heroes and Villains, the Bad and the..." (also Peers. But from outta Town.)

Sounds crazy, doesn't it? Well...
This is Baron Steffano writing to you. Some weird things have happened. I've been in the Society for almost 20 years. The Pope has passed away. And I'm dating a natural Autocrat. So...
There's gonna be a Feast to celebrate that Baron (from) Lions Gate's Birthday. It's gonna be EXACTLY what you might fear Steffano's Birthday would be. And exactly what you hope it might be.
(Nothing's more Medieval than a Papal Conclave - with a bar!)
Dublin & Kate are coming from Oregon (and bringing their daughter. And her husband, some guy named Duke Sir Torgul Bahadur).
That's all I know of the Celebrity Guest List so far - as my darling the Autocrat won't tell me who's coming. I don't care, as I will be there and I intend to enjoy my dear benJoseph's Arabic style cooking, play a bit of Tablero, flirt with some pretty wives and be elected Pope.

You can come or not, far as I'm concerned. It's $25. Or you can save $25, but you'll have missed it.

I'm sure the King will decline. I'm gonna ask him next.

Talk to my Antonella - 604-841-3169.

Once she tells me where the site is, I'll let you know.
