By The Light of A Northern Star....

We don't know.
By the time you all read this, the Final Poling (v.2) will be over. We won't know until sometime after Monday, 31 March, 2003, what the answer will be. That's the final day of the polling officially although it will take a day or two for the ballots to trickle in the rest of the way. I've been informed that both email and written ballots will be accepted for a day or two after the close date (for mailed ballots, that means the date stamp). Whether or not they will be accepted will be up to the Society Seneschal. This is partially due to the very "short-fuse" launch and closing of the Poll.
But we still won't know for probably a week after perhaps not until around April 10th or so what the final decision will be. Everyone receiving this, either via email or paper, probably knows about the sudden rush to get more ballots in as the last day loomed. So we may not even know if the Poll actually meant anything if we even reached the necessary threshold or returns!
I have also been reminded, through official channels, that any and everyone who holds an opinion on the subject of Tir Righ becoming a full Principality should send their letters and emails to The Crown, the Kingdom Seneschal, The Society Seneschal and even to The BOD. In particular, it is very important that the Peers of Tir Righ do so, as well as those holding office, both at the CP level (where it is required), and the branch level (where it is strongly recommended). If you have an opinion on the question, you should be expressing it.
And of course, sometime this month we should be hearing back about the appeal for the name "The North" for our Crown Principality.

Personally, I believe that it will happen. I think it is inevitable. Even if this Poll doesn't get the return necessary for it to be forwarded to The BOD, it's gonna happen. A year more, eighteen months tops. Because I cannot see it not happening. There is too much "weight" behind it.

On a slightly different note, I am now officially looking for a successor to this Office, to take over at the November Principality Event. That will mark my third anniversary in office, and I am a believer in term-limits; three years should be enough for anyone in any position.
Applications can be sent to myself (contact info can be found on the inside cover) and should include both a mundane and SCA resume. There are a couple of requirements, including having a good Internet connection, and taking over as the Moderator and Administrator of the CP Officers' email list. Interested parties should get a hold of me and we can talk it over.
Preferably, I would like to make a decision by the September Principality Event, and work with my successor over the next three months as a turnover period (which includes a Quarterly Report). There should be no problems for that person after that point, really this is not a particularly difficult job.

Frustrating on occasion, but not really difficult.
Lord Erasmus The Traveller, GdS

From The Guardians of The Waiting Thrones

Actually, DON'T blame the BOD

Just a quick note to clarify - The polling being "stale" wasn't the Bod's fault. They haven't even had a chance to see the petition yet.
The "powers that be", i.e. people who are Kingdom level types, and Society level types; some of them confirmed that since more than eight months had passed we need a current view of the Populace. Which, as has been pointed out, isn't unreasonable. We may wish we didn't have to do this again, but we do.
So, while we may use the typical line around here of "Blame the BOD!" that doesn't really quite hit the nail on the head.
Our apologies for any confusion or misunderstanding.

From The Crown Principality Archer

With the addition of another member of the family, HL John Macandrew has decided that he won't be able to dedicate enough time to fulfil his obligations as Tir Righ's Royal Archer. I have been asked to take over the position from him and so I pass on my thanks for his service and a heartfelt congratulations on the new baby. May she be a constant joy in your life.
For those target archers out there, there is a new version of the An Tir Book of Target available on the On Target On-Line web site. The revision has a few changes in bow classes and rules. The requirements for publishing practices and submitting score sheets on time are being cracked down on so please post practice dates and times and send in your Royal Round scores promptly.
For those combat archers out there I'll be making it a mission to attend as many events to teach classes on equipment construction and marshalling as possible. I know the changes in the rules in the last few years have been a hard hit but I want to show that they aren't as difficult to change over to as you think and that they don't seriously hinder our capabilities. We're stuck with them so we have to make the best of it.
If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at: fugu@spikyfishthing.com or 250-595-2889. Good day and good shooting and remember; Pointy end goes down range.

aka She Who Processes Submissions

Have you made an heraldic submission (name, device, badge, household name) in the past year? Have you moved since you made that submission? Have you notified me so that I can make sure the letter notifying you of the results of your submission will come to your current address?
In the past few months a great many of the letters I have sent have been returned to me as undeliverable. The top reason for this is that the submitter has moved and not let me know. When I write those letters, I use the address on your submission forms (so PLEASE write neatly!) to address the envelopes. If you've changed residences, I won't be able to find you. That's not fair, everyone needs to know the results of their submission.
So please, use email or the phone or those handy little "Change of Address" cards that the Post Office gives you in the moving packet to let me know that you've moved. When notifying me, tell me your SCA name and month you sent your submission in. I'll take care of the rest and when the time comes to notify you about your results, you'll get your letter in a timely manner and know all the details as soon as possible.
If you submitted during or before May 2002, you should have received a letter telling you the results of your heraldic submission. If you submitted after May 2002 your submission is somewhere in processing and you'll be due a letter when the results are published by Laurel Sovereign of Arms.
If you submitted during or before May 2002 and have not received your notification letter, please contact me and I'll find out what happened. If you submitted after May 2002 and have moved or otherwise changed your address, please notify me ASAP with your current address.
If you have submission in the process and just want to know what's happening and an ETA on the decision and notification, please contact me and I will provide a status update.
Thank you for helping the College of heralds help you with your submission. It's my pleasure to work with submitters.

What's In A Name
Lord Mitchell Girvin

The land of Tir Righ
Is a land of history
The land of Tir Righ
As old as land can be

A rose by any name
Would smell just as sweet
For a name is but a name
It's our spirit that won't meet defeat

The spirit here is strong
And the people here are true
Our life here flows in song
As the land of legends do

To call a Rose a weed
Would not change it in my eye
For the spirit is in the deed
And the name be but a lie

A name is but a name
It has no honour of its own
And to search one for its fame
Is such I can't condone

So call us as you may
For we know it's us you see
And we'll work towards the day
When they exalt the name Tir Righ

A Review of the Marozzo Workshop held in the Port of
Duncan, Lord Macquarrie

It was a genuine pleasure to be in the recent swordsmanship workshop under the tutelage of Randolph Dana which was held Saturday March 15, 2003 at Crickstow-on-Sea.
It was clear right from the start of the afternoon that the instructor had a deep passion for the material. This passion was well communicated to the students who threw themselves into the material with enthusiasm.
Jumping right into the deep end the class was immersed in Italian fencing terms to describe the various guards and positions. Oh mama mia were there a lot of Italian terms! For a few moments the CFB Esquimalt Drill shed sounded like a language class.
From the basic stances the students were led through the Progressions of Marozzo. For anyone familiar with the kata of Eastern martial arts the Progressions are a period European equivalent, although far shorter perhaps than most Eastern forms.
The Progressions were well taught. This series of movements (still in a foreign language) were quickly learned by all students. What is more impressive is that with the aid of printed materials (distributed later via the web) yours truly might actually be able to repeat the sequence with some confidence. This is entirely a testament to very effective teaching technique on the part of the instructor I hasten to add, not anything to do with my abilities.
The instructor stated that this was a class still in development and certainly there were areas where the class could be improved or expanded. It would have been nice for example to have the handouts at hand but that would have required formal pre-registration.
As someone interested in applying the material to heavy fighting it was also disappointing not to be covering the material on sword and dagger (which had been advertised) and sword and target (which had not). The reality of the time available however would not allow exploration of this material and it was a workshop for rapier fighters so I was really only there on sufferance of the instructor.
I would strongly suggest that the single afternoon be turned into a full two-day weekend. Not only could more material be covered but it would also allow for more exploration of the history of the material and the context in which it was produced. For example, there was some discussion of the changing fashion in swords which affected Marozzo's techniques but not enough to get a complete picture.
Overall I would highly recommend this Workshop and instructor to anyone who has an interest in Western martial arts and late period swords and swordsmanship in particular.

Because I Can.....

Erik the Penult of Cumberland, of the Shire of Eisenmarche, posted this a while back on The Steps. I can't vouch for its authenticity,
personally, but, well.....you had best read it for yourself......

This was found by my father studying up on his Ukranian heritage. It was apparently written by an ancestor of ours....not much gets lost in the translation.

[Letter of the Zaporozhian Cossacks of Ukraine replying to the Sultan of Turkey]

Thou Turkish Devil!
Brother and companion to the accursed Devil, and Secretary to Lucifer himself, Greetings!
What the hell kind of noble knight art thou? Satan voids and thy army devours. Never wilt thou be fit to have the sons of Crist under thee. Thy army we fear not, and by land and by sea in our chaikas will we do battle against thee.
Thou scullion of Babylon, thou beerbrewer of Jerusalem, thou goat thief of Alexandria, thou swineherd of Egypt, both the Greater and the Lesser, thou Armenian pig and Tartar goat. Thou hangman of Kamyanets, thou evildoer of Podolia, thou grandson of the Devil himself, thou great silly oaf of all the world and of the netherworld and, before our God, a blockhead, a swine's snout, a mare's ass, and clown of Hades. May the Devil take thee!
That is what the Cossacks have to say to thee, thou basest born of runts! Unfit art thou to lord it over true Christians!
The date we know not, for no calender have we got. The moon (month) is in the sky, the year is in a book, and the day is the same with us here as with ye over there -- and thou canst kiss us thou knowest where!

Koshoviy Otaman Ivan Sirko
and all the Zaporozhian Cossack Brotherhood

Erik goes on to say: "Gotta love that oldtime diplomacy........."

To which Your Editor can only add: "And you thought today's diplomats don't know what their jobs are supposed to be!!!"
